Paul Horton served 21 years in EOD (the Bomb Squad). He completed over 1,200 combat missions in which he often showed up people’s worst days of their lives and strove to clear all hazards and return them home. He was highlighted in the 2011 Chief of Staff’s Portraits in Courage booklet for his heroism in combat. Additionally, in 2009 he was chosen as one of 20 National Heroes by the President of the United States and became one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year. He earned 4 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, and multiple Commendations with Valor. As a result of his injuries, he was retired from military service and returned to civilian life in 2015.
He began his artistic journey in 2017 when he took Photography courses at PPCC. He got his degree in Commercial Photography and then pursued and obtained a Bachelor of Visual Arts in2021. Paul works in oil, acrylic, steel, photo composites, and mixed media. He uses layers in all his work, developing art from both his experiences as well as referencing other artists and movements. He especially enjoys creating work that discusses our relationship with our landscape and how that affects us and our world view. He emphasizes art that relates to our sense of time and memory with an understanding that neither is as precise as we believe.
