Fine Art Prints from Composite Digital Art/Photographs
The Phenomenology Series
The artwork in this series considered composite photographs containing hundreds of layers. I created this series by taking around a hundred photos, attempting to get as many angles and perspectives as possible. I took normal, over-exposed, and under-exposed photos as well as ones with lots of grain and artifacts from high ISO. I then painstakingly merged them in Photoshop using hundreds of layers while trying to get to the heart of the structure. I try to understand how these are more than physical structures - that our memories, feelings and the connections we made there are indelibly imprinted into both us and this landscape. They exist simultaneously in the past, present, and future.
This series is rooted in Phenomenology, a philosophical study of our perceptions of consciousness and structures. I use the viewpoint from almost losing my left eye in combat, resulting in a perpetual state of blurriness and movement in all the things I see. I implement multiple exposures to allow the viewer to see the world through my eyes while also experiencing the many ways we can perceive our world. This method also allows me to address how space and time affect our perception of structures and experiences. Our experiences of structures and landscape change over time due to our memories fading as well as structures deteriorating and changing. As buildings and man-made objects shift or vibrate with movement, they become less about their lines and forms and more about their essence and the indented impressions they leave on our memory.
